Where is everyone taking EMT at?

Post  ADMIN on Sun Dec 20, 2009 1:23 am

I was signed up for schoolcraft, but I don't think i will be able to juggle the pre-reqs along with EMT, I will be signing up for ACI.

If you have taken it already post how it was, or where you're going too.

I was thinking about getting that degree, but I think I am going to focus on EMT/Paramedic right now just so i can start applying, than once I have those I will finish with my degree. Pelham would be hard work man, a paramedic in 3 months?! that's awesome and scary

Ugghh, 3 months of paramedic day and night? You'll be tougher hombres than I'll ever be. The trick is financing a place to stay for 3 months.

Medic is NOT impossible, but I'd say it's the most academically-challenging. The Fire Academy and EMT-Basic require a lot of time to pound the material into your head, but the concepts themselves really aren't all that difficult. In Paramedic, the cardiology (the electrical signature of the heart) and pharmacology (all the drugs, and their various effects on the body) are very technical and require A LOT of study and concentration. It's definitely a class you have to make a priority in your life. It's a long year, but it's only a year (or so).

I'm hoping this EMT-B will make Medic a little easier. I got a EMT-Medic Flashcard Book, and it looks like hieroglyphics to me...

There are 3 levels of Emergency Medical Technician:

1) EMT-Basic - Often called "EMT" or just "Basic". Usually a one semester course. Glorified first aid really. You HAVE to take EMT-Basic to take any higher classes.

2) EMT-Intermediate/Specialist - This is a fairly short class that focuses mostly on starting IVs. It's not a requirement, and most people in southeast Michigan skip this class and go right on to Medic. If you are working for a private ambulance co. and you have the opportunity during Medic class to take the Specialist exam, it's often a bump up in pay so it's something to think about (and you don't have to do the IV stations later when testing for Medic).

3) EMT-Paramedic - Usually these folks are just called "Paramedics" or "Medics"(new medics sometimes call themselves "para-gods"). This is a 12-18 month class where you'll learn more advanced theory, anatomy and physiology, drugs and their f/x, and [-shudder!-] cardiology. In this class you'll learn how to start IVs, intubate a patient and breath for them, read cardiac rhythms, and shock people with enough electricity to stop a heart. You'll also meet some of the most insufferable, self-important, egotistical, and completely worthless pricks known to man: Paramedic Instructors. If you liked Fire Instructors, you'll LOVE Paramedic Instructors.

where's everyone taking emt at

Post  VanSinge on Mon Jan 11, 2010 10:21 am

Me and another from aug09 are signed up for LSTI Paramedic program down on 8mi Southfield. The program starts on Feb 2nd and ends on Oct 12th 2010, runs Tues & Thur 9-5. They just started this program due to demand, don't know if it's filled up yet only 25 allowed. I was going to take it at Schoolcraft but they only offer 4hr classes and I wouldn't have finished until Summer 2011! The program costs $3999 due at start or you can put $600 down+$400=$4400 and make payments how ever you want as long as it's paid for b4 class is over. Includes all books, uniforms, state written & practicals and they have clinicals set up w/Community EMS & Botsford in Farmington. It's the fastest, most affordable program I've found in MI too bad Schoolcraft wouldn't do something like this. Hope this helps, Good Luck & Be Safe.

VanS, Where did you take your basic at? I looked into LSTI for basic because they're only a mile from my house, but I stuck with Scraft for a couple different reasons which now I can't remember. I might take my medic class there if they offer me a EMT-B job in May.

Alpena CC Spring 07 did 3rds w/Alpena ALS Squad. I was told tonight by FF in my Fire Admin/Org class that he took refreshers there & said they're good & I like the fact I'll be testing next Oct! instead of 2011 w/scraft when I'd b almost 42! jeepers.

UPDATE: Found out that out of Schoolcraft's last Medic class (don't know how many) none of them passed their NR Tests! & the chief instructor is gone. Can't verify info but comes from one of their fmr Medics who's a FT FF in my Arson class. Just did my 1st day w/Fraser at LSTI gonna be hard but I'm confident we'll make it, study study study!!!

EMT is very very easy (in my opinion), medic isn't to bad as long as you take it seriously. HVA out in Washtenaw Co has one of if not the best programs in the state.

And for the record, cardiology is one of the easiest sections in medic...if anyone needs any help with their EMT or Medic, feel free to let me know...no, i'm not the para-god in structor type that are out there, just a smart ass looking to help some people get a job.

--for the record, LSTI sucks...spend more money and drive farther to go to scraft or HVA...LSTI will help you do one thing and that's fail the state and national registry exam.

Cfrey.....r u crazy? Thousands of different rhythms and cardio is easy? Cardio and pharm are basically all the seperate a medic from a basic. ACI is a decent cheap place to take medic. They are new and I am in the 2nd class that they have had. We are done in 4 weeks. Unless you go to HVA or scraft, all the schools are the same. You have to do the work and not depend on your instructor. They will pass you even if you don't have a chance in hell cause they want your money. ACI will pass everybody in our class and only prob 3 or 4 of us will pass NR. I've heard that other schools r the same. Good thing about HVA and scraft is they only pass 40-50% of their students so they have an excellent pass rate. Just make sure that you don't wait till the last month to cram cause it won't work.
